Time Of The Giants

Anne Kennedy is a novelist, awardwinning short-story writer, editor, literary critic and scriptwriter, once described as "one of the most successful of the innovative younger postmodernists" (Oxford Companion to NZ Literature). She weaves many influences and images into her writing including music, art, film and her Catholic upbringing, all underpinned by a wry humour and a sparkling imagination. Long known for the poetic qualities of her fiction, she at last turned to her hand to poetry proper and produced the sequence, "Sing-song" in June 2003 (Auckland University Press). "Sing-song" was named Poetry Book of the Year at the 2004 Montana New Zealand Book Awards. Her fiction has been published internationally, including the novels include "Musica Ficta" (AUP) and "A Boy and His Uncle" (Picador). She won the 1985 BNZ Katherine Mansfield Short Story Award. She was awarded a Creative NZ grant in 2003 to assist her in writing a new novel. Anne's film scripts include "Crush" (1992) and "Monkey's Mask" (2001), based on Dorothy Porter's verse novel, and a finalist for Best Adapted Screenplay in the Australian FCCA Film Awards 2002 and the Australian Film Institute Awards. Anne is still perhaps best-known to many in New Zealand for her television adaptation of her own short story "Jewel's Darl'", directed by Peter Wells and starring (the now Member of Parliament) Georgina Beyer. Anne is married to another awardwinning writer, the poet and children's writer Robert Sullivan. They live with their two children in Hawaii, where Robert is teaching Creative Writing at the University of Hawaii and Anne is writing a novel and a new collection of poems "Time of the Giants". She returned to New Zealand in March 2004 as a guest of the Writers and Readers Week of the International Arts Festival and will appear at the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival in May 2005.
