Joe VanderVeer, Jr, M.D. has been a general surgeon and a member of the American College of Surgeons for 27 years. In his career he's been a faculty member at two medical schools, director of a large emergency department, and in private surgical practice. He is the son and grandson of physicians, and his daughter is an internist. An accomplished writer, Dr. VanderVeer has published over 120 articles in medical and lay journals and was a columnist for the Christian magazine Virtue. He majored in English at Wesleyan University and took pre-med sciences at Bryn Mawr College. After receiving his M.D. from the University of Rochester, N.Y., he took surgical residency training in Portland, OR. He has practiced surgery in Oregon and Arizona. Due to travel during his education, his faith background is diverse and ecumenical. For four years he was a high Episcopalian church choirboy. Raised near Philadelphia, he was also influenced by the Society of Friends. He was a Methodist during his college years and as a surgical resident became a Presbyterian elder. Later in his career he was an elder in a Baptist church.
