Tom was born and raised in Bakerton, a small coal mining village in the soft coal region of central Pennsylvania. After serving a stint with the United States Air Force, Tom returned to Bakerton. He held several jobs in the area before going to work in a local coal mine. Tom worked underground as a miner for ten years until a mining injury forced him to quit the mines. Tom returned to school at the Altoona campus of The Pennsylvania State University. While attending Penn State, a professor suggested to Tom that 'he should write a book.' This book is the result.A.
