Julia Alvarez was selected by the New York Public Library as one of fifty poets included in its year-long exhibit The Hand of the Poet: Original Manuscripts by 100 Masters, from John Donne to Julia Alvarez. Her stories, essays, and poems have appeared in the New York Times Magazine, the New Yorker, Ploughshares, the American Poetry Review, Prairie Schooner, and Best American Poetry. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Jessica Nobel-Maxwell Poetry Prize for 1995, awarded by the American Poetry Review, and the American Academy of Poetry Prize at Syracuse University. Alvarez has also been the Robert Frost Fellow in Poetry at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference. She has published four novels, a book of essays, and three collections of poetry.
