Dr. K. Ullas Karanth was born in Puttur, Karnataka State, India. He is a conservation zoologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society, assigned to WCS-International Programs out of New York, USA, but lives in India. Dr. Karanth is one of the world's leading experts on tigers and related conservation issues. He gained his academic training in wildlife biology while associated with the Smithsonian Institution and the University of Florida in the United States, and with Mangalore University in Inda. He holds a Ph.D. in wildlife biology from Mangalore University, India - 1993; M. S. in wildlife biology from the University of Florida, USA - 1988; received an award from the Fellow Zoological Society of London, and Twenty First Century Tiger Award - 1998. He obtained his PhD, studying predator prey relations in Nagarahole forests of India focusing on the ecology and behavior of large predators such as the tiger, leopard and the Asian wild dog. He has published chapters in several scientific books including those published by Cambridge University Press, Columbia University Press and Island Press.
