Bernard Ireland's passion for the Royal Navy and its history was kindled early in Malta during the Abyssinian crisis. He went on to 'do his time' in Portsmouth Dockyard, and is proud to have matriculated through the last Fourth Year class of the old Royal Dockyard Upper School. After university he joined the then Royal Naval Scientific Service, spending the remainder of his working life engaged in aspects of warship design and research. His interest in the technology of ships thus equals his interest in their history. He began writing in the early sixties as a pastime, taking it up professionally in 1972 while Editorial Consultant for the partwork History of Ships. He has since made major contributions to several other partworks and journals, and has written books on a variety of maritime topics, this title being his twenty-fifth. Bernard Ireland and his wife live on the Hampshire coast. They have a son and a daughter, and one granddaughterIreland, Bernard is the author of 'War at Sea 1914-45' with ISBN 9780304353408 and ISBN 030435340X.
