By the end of 1942 Britain had lost many large ships at sea. Ark Royal, Barham, Courageous, Duchess of Atholl, Eagle, Empress of Britain, Orcades, Strathallan, Viceroy of India and Warwick Castle had all been torpedoed and sunk.
