Jimmy Murphy left school at 16 and took up an apprenticeship in house painting. In 1986 he started writing plays, joining the National Writer's Workshop in 1990. Brothers of the Brush was acclaimed as the Best New Play at the Dublin Theatre Festival of 1993, before embarking on a worldwide tour. Murphy won the Stewart Parker Award for new writing in 1994. The Kings of the Kilburn High Road premiered at Garter Lane Theatre, Waterford in 2000, before transferring to the Tricycle Theatre, London in March, 2001. Murphy's other plays include Peel's Brimstone, Question Everything you are Told and A Picture of Paradise. He has also written All the Wild Horses and episodes of Ballykissangel and Tinseltown for BBC television.
