Transforming Africa An Agenda for Action

The author has been executive director of the Economic Commission for Africa since 1995. In this collection of lectures given between 2000 and 2005, he presents his views on how Africa can respond to the opportunities and limitations of globalisation, assesses the continent's quest for faster growth and poverty reduction, and offers policy prescriptions for freeing up the constraints preventing sustainable development. Pre-1995 was a period of slow or negative growth, a record of dictatorship and poor governance, and widespread conflict. The last ten years have seen growth rates steadily accelerate, democratic systems widely adopted, and conviction that Africa must lead its efforts to develop. He is positive about Africa's future, but identifies critical areas such as HIV/AIDS and agriculture where much remains to be done if Africa is to progress.Amoako, K.
