Doc, as he liked to be called by those who knew him best, was born in the small Maine town of Mexico. After graduating from Mexico High School, he went to Colby College. It was there that his academic life began in earnest. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he returned to Maine to finish his studies at Colby and to work in the local paper mill. Choosing medicine as a lifetime career, he studied at the University of Vermont College of Medicine where he was mentored by Dr. E.L. Amidon, a physician who embodied the concept of family medicine. Dr. Ed returned to his hometown where he spent nearly his entire life devoted to his patients in the Mexico-Rumford area. It is in the Androscoggin River Valley that he wrote this history of the early Maine Wabenaki Indians. He spent 25 years writing and studying this culture and it became his daily passion. He died in 2001 having completed the manuscript leaving it behind in much the same manner as did his main character, Natanis.Martin, Edward is the author of 'Thunder from the Mountains', published 2004 under ISBN 9780976419709 and ISBN 097641970X.
