In a Storybook Career cut tragically short, Michael Kelly wrote for many national publications, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The New Republic. His award-winning coverage of the first Gulf War led to the highly acclaimed book Martyrs' Day: Chronicle of a Small War. While covering the war in Iraq for The Atlantic Monthly and The Washington Post, he was killed on April 3, 2003, when the Humvee he was riding in came under fire and plunged into a canal. He was forty-six years old.
