Geoffrey C. Ward, historian, screenwriter, and former editor of American Heritage magazine, is coauthor of The Civil War and Baseball and was principal writer of the television series upon which they were based. He is also the cowriter (with Dayton Duncan) of the script for The West series and the author of many other books, including A First-Class Temperament: The Emergence of Franklin Roosevelt, which won the 1989 National Book Critics Circle Award for biography and the 1990 Francis Parkman Prize awarded by the Society of American Historians. Stephen Ives is the producer and director of The West series. He served as a consulting producer for The Civil War, and his documentary Lindbergh opened the 1990 season of The American Experience on PBS. In 1989, he coproduced The Congress with Ken Burns. Ken Burns, executive producer of The West, has been making documentary films for over fifteen years, most recently directing the landmark series Baseball and The Civil War.
