The Robotics Review provides a one stop resource for computer scientists and engineers already involved in robotics and for those who are just entering the field and who need to keep on top of current developments. It brings together reviews of selected papers, synopses of selected technical areas, and annotated bibliographies in four broad areas of research: planning and artificial intelligence, sensing and robot vision, manipulation, and mobile robotics and walking machines. A major portion of this annual is devoted to reviews of selected papers. Not simply reprints of the abstracts of papers, these reviews are written by members of the editorial board to emphasize new results and provide clear statements of how the articles relate to previous work. The Review also contains short original surveys summarizing a particular sub-area of research. These synopses, along with annotated bibliographies, tie together the results of many researchers, placing them in historical perspective. Oussama Khatib is a Senior Research Associate in the Computer Science Department at Stanford University. John J. Craig is Director of Robotics R&D at Silma, Inc., in Cupertino, California.
