The first part of this volume presents an analyses of six openings: Ruy Lopez, Three- and Four-Knights Opening, Scotch Gambit, Two-Knights' Defence, Russian and Philidor Defence. The analyses mainly consist of remarks and explanations to games played by renowned masters. These games are collected according to a specific system, to which Steinitz adds many contemporary innovations. This part concludes with all 17 games played in the match Steinitz - Tchigorin, Havana 1889, which was won by Steinitz scoring + 10 = 1 -6.
