Lockwood [1847-1897] observes that Mr. Pickwick would have fared even worse under the modern law of evidence, which would have given Buzfuz an opportunity to prepare a devastating cross-examination. This volume originated as a lecture delivered at Morley Hall, Hackney, in 1893 that was attended by Henry Fielding Dickens, the author's son and an attorney.
