Caroline Kemp, a lonely ten-year-old girl, discovers an enchanted picture book in the attic of her family’s ancestral home. The book is inscribed to Caroline Kemp, 1666. Intrigued, she searches the family tree and then the churchyard where all the Kemps have been buried since they arrived in America in the early 1600s. What she discovers confuses her even more. Caroline inadvertently wishes herself into the enchanted book where she meets Caro, an ancestor who had mysteriously disappeared centuries before. Together, Caro and Caroline travel from illustration to illustration, sharing adventures involving pirates, mermaids, fairies, winged horses, dragons, good wizards and evil sorcerers. The sorcerer Wintersole challenges the girls to a game. Caro and Caroline must find a way to break the curse he casts on the enchanted lands before Caroline’s eleventh birthday.
