Barry Davies BEM joined the Welsh Guards in 1962 at the age of seventeen. Four years later he volunteered for the SAS, passing selection while winning the 'Best Shot' trophy. He remained with the SAS for eighteen years, during which time he was involved in skirmishes all over the world. He saw action in the Middle East, including the Oman War. He fought in the jungles of both southeast Asia and South America. Towards the end of his career, he worked alone in the bandit counties of Northern Ireland. One major event in his SAS career was taking part in the Mogadishu hijack. The British Prime Minister sent Davies, together with one other, to assist the German government in rescuing 92 people from a Lufthansa 737 aircraft in Mogadishu, Somalia. With their direct help the Germans stormed the aircraft, killing three of the four terrorists while freeing all the remaining hostages. For this action, the Queen awarded Davies the British Empire Medal. On leaving the SAS, Barry Davies turned his writing hobby into his profession. He has written numerous books about the SAS and has produced several television programmes.
