Arnold Peabody was a quiet man whose mother had died. He visited a local medium to see if he could obtain contact with his mother from beyond the grave. Not long after, Mildred Hewitt from Avenbridge falls to her death at a local beauty spot on a snowy night. Her son Gilbert goes off the rails and the community watches in fascination.
