Born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, Antonine Maillet is one of Canada's best-known writers, both at home and abroad. She is the author of children's books, radio and television scripts, more than a dozen plays, many adult novels, and the unique La Sagouine, the irreverent charwoman's monologue that has become a Canadian favourite.
