Ben Marcus grew up surfing in Santa Cruz, California in the 1970s. He surfed and traveled and in 1988 he was hired as an editor at Surfer Magazine for 10 years. Ben wrote 130 issues of the magazine, traveling the world, describing shark attacks, drownings, and competitions. His goal when he started at Surfer was to point the media spotlight at Santa Cruz and Northern California, and he accomplished that beyond his wildest dreams when he wrote a story about a new big-wave spot called Mavericks.
