Michael Tisserand's most recent book is "Sugarcane Academy: How a New Orleans Teacher and His Storm-Struck Students Created a School to Remember" (Harcourt). Part journalism and part memoir, "Sugarcane Academy" is the story of a temporary, one-room schoolhouse set up in rural Louisiana for evacuated children - including Tisserand's own kids.
