The Dark Age of Greece (1100-700 BC) was an important historical period which bridged the gap between Mycenaean palace civilization and the city states of Archaic and Classical Greece. Through a detailed examination of pots and their designs in relation to the archaeological context (chiefly graves) in which they were used and found, this study considers the relationship between the development of pot style, changes in burial customs, and social change. Such an investigation reveals how art responds to social change. This radical approach to style challenges many of the assumptions which have underpinned more traditional studies of Early Greek art.Whitley, James is the author of 'Style and Society in Dark Age Greece The Changing Face of a Pre-Literate Society 1100-700 Bc', published 2003 under ISBN 9780521545853 and ISBN 0521545854.
