Miriam E. Nelson, Ph.D., is the author of the international best-sellers Strong Women Stay Young; Strong Women Stay Slim; Strong Women, Strong Bones; and Strong Women Eat Well. She is Associate Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy and director of the Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Tufts University. Dr. Nelson is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine, an honor reserved for those who have demonstrated superior leadership and research in the field of exercise. Her original research papers on nutrition and exercise have been published in distinguished peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of the American Medical Association. In 1994 she was named a Brookdale National Fellow, a prestigious award given annually to only five or six young scholars in the field of aging. She was a Bunting Fellow at Radcliffe College in 1997-1998. In 2000, Strong Women, Strong Bones received the Books for a Better Life Award from the Multiple Sclerosis Society for best wellness book. Dr. Nelson has been featured on many television and radio shows including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, and Fresh Air. She is the founder of www.StrongWomen.com. She lives in Concord, Massachusetts, with her husband and three children. Kristin R. Baker, Ph.D., is a Doctoral Fellow at the National Institutes of Health Multipurpose Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Center at the Boston University Medical School. She received her doctorate from the School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University under the guidance of Drs. Ronenn Roubenoff and Miriam Nelson. Her doctoral thesis was an investigation of the effects of strength training on knee osteoarthritis. Dr. Baker received research awards from the Arthritis Foundation, Life Fitness Academy, and the American Federation of Aging/Glenn Foundation to conduct this research. She currently conducts research on complementary treatments for arthritis, and lives in Concord, Massachusetts with her husband and daughter. Ronenn Roubenoff, M.D., M.H.S., trained in internal medicine, rheumatology, and clinical epidemiology at Johns Hopkins University. He then continued his education in nutrition at Tufts University and currently focuses his research on the interactions of nutrition, exercise, and hormonal and immune regulators of metabolism in chronic disease and aging. He is currently Chief of the Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, and Sarcopenia Laboratory at the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University and is Associate Professor of Medicine and Nutrition at Tufts. Dr. Roubenoff is an author of more than one hundred scientific papers and the recipient of many awards, including the American College of Rheumatology Senior Scholar Award, the Pew Foundation National Nutrition Scholar, and the Tufts University Distinguished Faculty Award. He is also a member of the medical honor societies Alpha Omega Alpha and Delta Omega. He practices rheumatology and nutrition at the Itzhak Perlman Family Arthritis Center at New England Medical Center in Boston, where his patients have recognized him with the Oliver Smith Award for Extraordinary Service and Caring over a dozen times. Dr. Roubenoff lives in Sharon, Massachusetts, with his wife, son, dog, and two cats. Lawrence Lindner, M.A., is the executive editor of the Tufts University Health and Nutrition Letter. He also penned the "Eating Right" column for The Washington Post for three years and currently freelances for a variety of magazines on health, travel, and other subjects.
