William T. Stearn (1911-2001) was one of the outstanding botanists of the twentieth century, with an international reputation for research on plants, nomenclature, and the history of botany. He was librarian at the Royal Horticultural Society's Lindley Library for many years and later worked as a botanist at London's Natural History Museum. Among his many honors, he was awarded the R.H.S.'s Veitch and Victoria Medals, the Linnean Medal, the American Society of Plant Taxonomists' Asa Gray Award, and Sweden's Order of the North Star.
