James E. Wise, Jr., became a naval aviator in 1953 following graduation from Northwestern University. He served as an intelligence officer aboard USS America (CVA-66) and later as the commanding officer of various naval intelligence units. Since his retirement from the Navy in 1975 as a captain, Wise has held several senior executive posts in private-sector companies Paul W. Wilderson III is executive editor of the Naval Institute Press. He holds a Ph.D. in American history from the University of New Hampshire. Wilderson's articles and reviews have appeared in The Journal of American History, American Quarterly, Boston Globe, Historical New Hampshire, and the American National Biography.
