David James is a journeyman journalist and amateur historian who came under the influence of Louise Shattuck and Spiritualism as practiced in Lake Pleasant at the time one millennium was preparing to yield to another. He has lived in Greenfield, Massachusetts, since 1977 and, since 2001, has written a column which appears more-or-less” weekly on the Religion Page of The Recorder, a newspaper whose circulation area includes the 26 towns of Franklin County. He is author of In the Spirit: Varieties of spiritual experience in the Franklin County area of Western Massachusetts” and In the Spirit2: More Varieties of spiritual experience in the Franklin County area of Western Massachusetts.” Both books are compilations of his writings, focusing on spiritual and religious themes. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, March 7, 1942, grew up in various communities in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, and graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, New York, in 1964 with a bachelor of arts degree in American history. He initially came to Franklin County in the spring of 1969 as a founding member of a mini commune in the Town of Warwick. Since 1993 he has been OOO (Only Operating Officer) of Delta House Press, a home-based desktop publishing company. He has been a member of The National Spiritual Alliance since 2000 and is currently treasurer of the organization and a member of its Board of Directors.
