Ruth J. Silverstein is the former Chairperson of the Department of Foreign Languages at the Richmond Hill High School, New York City, and an early vigorous proponent of a foreign language study requirement for the high school diploma, which is today embodied in the New York City diploma. A specialist in Spanish and its teaching, she has been Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics, NDEA; Assistant Professor of Spanish (Adjunct), New York University; and Lecturer of Foreign Language Methodology at Hunter College and of Spanish at Queens College, City University of New York. She has also taught secondary-school students of Spanish from beginners to Advanced Placement in both the Junior High School and Senior High School Divisions. Her postgraduate course work was taken at Teachers College, Columbia University, and at the University of Mexico, Mexico. She has lived and traveled in Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Spain; and has participated in innovative programs for teaching Spanish, and in writing foreign language syllabi for the New York City Board of Education. In Memoriam. Allen Pomerantz, Ph.D., was a valued coauthor of Spanish the Easy Way and Spanish Now, and Professor Emeritus of the Modern Language Department at the Bronx Community College (C.U.N.Y.). In earlier years Professor Pomerantz taught at the University of Wisconsin, for the U.S. armed forces, and for several years in local high schools. He received a Fulbright-Hayes scholarship to study at the Universidad de Valladolid, Spain, and completed his graduate studies at New York University. Allen passed from this life in March of 1998. Heywood Wald, Ph.D., is the former Chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and Bilingual Programs at the Martin Van Buren High School, New York City. He has served as center director of the Intensive Spanish Language Development Program of the New York City Board of Education to teach members of the teaching and administrative staff basic, functional Spanish. A foreign language specialist, Dr. Wald has taught Spanish, French, and Italian in both junior and senior high schools and is coauthor of Aventuras en la ciudad, an extremely popular supplementary reader currently in use throughout the United States and abroad, and of several other popular foreign language textbooks.
