Alan Forrest is Professor of Modern History at the University of York, UK. He has published widely on French Revolutionary and Napoleonic history. Recent books include Napoleons Men: The Soldiers of the Revolution and Empire (200) and Paris, the Provinces and the French Revolution (2004). Karen Hagemann is the James G. Kenan Distinguished Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. Her research focuses on modern German and European history and gender history. She has published widely on the history of labour, welfare, education, womens movements, and the nation, military and war. Jane Rendall taught for many years at the University of York, UK, in the History Department, the Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies and the Centre for Womens Studies, and is now an Honorary Fellow of the University.
