Author William E. Winterstein Sr. is a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and internationally-known rocket engineer who was part of the Apollo team that put the first man on the moon. He served during World War II as a one of a select group of technical intelligence officers that reported to the Pentagon on the capabilities and performance of U.S. and enemy missiles. He earned the Bronze Star for being involved with shooting Japanese rockets back at the Japanese troops. He was on McArthur’s staff going back into the Philippines. After the armistice, he was responsible for security for the team of German rocket scientists headed by Dr. Werhner von Braun, and worked closely with von Braun and his team from 1945 through the 1960s.
