Sebastiano Serlio is known to scholars today primarily as an architectureheorist who codified and illustrated the five Roman orders of architecturen Volume IV, "Regole generale" (1537) of a four-book treatise onrchitecture that collectively became one of the cornerstone texts ofenaissance architecture. Less well-known, however, are Serlio'srchitectural designs and built works, most of which were realized in Francend which are documented in this publication.;Serlio was born in Bologna inround 1475 and studied painting in his early life before moving to Rome inbout 1514, where he was a pupil of the High Renaissance architect Baldassarieruzzi. Following the sack of Rome, Serlio went to Venice, becomingcquainted with influential members of the French court and the Frenchmbassador. Serlio traveled to France in 1541 to advise on the building workst Fontainebleau, and he remained in France for many years.
