John R. Claypool was born in Franklin, Kentucky, and grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and his theological training at Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky, and at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas. Dr. Claypool earned a doctor of theology degree and has received four honorary doctorates. He was ordained to ministry in 1953 and served as pastor of five Baptist churches in Kentucky, Tennessee, Texas, and Mississippi. He was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1986 and served as Rector of Saint Luke's Episcopal Church in Birmingham, Alabama, for nearly fourteen years. Since 2001 he has served as Theologian-in-Residence at Trinity Episcopal Church in New Orleans, Louisiana, and as the Visiting Professor of Homiletics at Mercer University's McAfee School of Theology in Atlanta, Georgia.
