My Name is Robert Lee Douthitt, III. With the name—comes a disease. This is the story of my life and my journey with alcoholism, drugs, crime, incarceration, and eventually, my recovery. I have been sober now since March 20, 2004. I’ve hit rock bottom many times in my life, and each time I swore it was the last. This time, I think I’ve done it. I’m committed to my recovery, family, and future, and am again an active member of a twelve-step program. I am writing this book because I feel that my story is a compelling one that deserves to be told. It will help me in my own recovery, and it could reach out and touch someone who may be headed down the same path I’ve taken. If I’m able to make one person stop and think about his/her next choice in life, it will have been worth it to divulge what is a very painful and often horrifying recounting of my own experiences. Some of the stories are humorous. Some are so twisted it will turn your stomach and drop your jaw to believe them. But I guarantee you, they are all true.
