Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was born in Edinburgh. In 1867 he began to study engineering, his father's profession, at Edinburgh University but secretly wanted to be a writer. It took some years for him to establish a reputation, beginning with Treasure Island in 1883, receiving critical acclaim for Kidnapped in 1886 and reaching bestseller status with The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the same year. His first volume of poetry was A Child's Garden of Verses in 1885. He wrote poetry throughout his career and published three volumes in his lifetime. He spent the last six years of his life in the South Pacific.
