In 1685, James, Duke of Monmouth, pretender to the throne, was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor, bringing to an end what was known as the Pitchfork Rebellion. It is generally accepted that his parents were not legally married at the time of his birth and therefore his claim to the throne was not valid& Suppose, just for a moment, that Monmouths claim was, in fact, true, his parents legally married& Suppose that one of his descendants, a rich and powerful man, devised a plan to avenge his ancestor and seize the throne of England. A man wealthy enough to possess his own army and powerful enough to set it up in England right under the nose of the authorities. How could such a man be stopped?
