Political Women examines examines women's roles in American state and local politics. Three major trends -- the increase in the number of female officials, growing political activism among women, and women's notable policy accomplishments -- suggest that a 'quiet revolution' is taking place in politics at state and local levels. The authors develop four provocative themes. Firstly, that women are transforming traditional political concepts. Secondly, that female officials have a distinctive approach and role in politics. Thirdly, political parties can still be problematic for women, and lastly, that women's marginal status in government and majority status as voters is significant. They suggest that differences in men's and women's politics are more likely to surface where there are greater numbers of women officials or where the female electorate is mobilized. The book constitutes an important addition to the series, and will be of interest to those studying the place of women in modern society, political scientists, and students of American government and politics.Flammang, Janet A. is the author of 'Political Women: Current Roles in State and Local Government - Janet A.
