It is the early 1950s. Below Olympia’s capitol dome, from the Northern Pacific Railway trestle, a lone and desolate hobo makes his way along the edge of the wooded lake. He stops to inspect a prominent stump, nods toward the top of the hill where a trail leads, and starts the climb.
