The book will provide a review of pharmacological and psychosocial treatment interventions for individuals with schizophrenia and related disorders. It will be an updated, revised and expanded new edition; we have recruited a fourth editor, Professor Kim Mueser, a leading expert in the area of psychosocial treatments in schizophrenia, who will also enhance the US component to the volume. The first edition has been well reviewed and feedback from clinicians has been excellent. A number of bulk sales to pharmaceutical companies have been negotiated. The book will review the major need areas for pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments in schizophrenia, encompassing: psychotic symptoms, including positive symptoms; and negative symptoms cognitive symptoms will be a particular focus, given the apparent primacy of these symptoms in determining disability in schizophrenia co-morbid symptoms such as depression and anxiety; cognitive behavioral models have usefully been applied in depression, and more recently shown to be of benefit for social anxiety in schizophrenia co-morbid general health issues including cardiovascular risk-factors, diabetes etc.; guidelines will be provided for screening, monitoring and intervention for these problems (new topic) lifestyle issues, such as diet and exercise, to ameliorate the negative effects of poor physical health and enhance self-esteem; also work and study risk behaviors, including alcohol and illicit substance use, will also be targeted, given the negative impact of both physical and mental health violence in schizophrenia, with guidelines about risk assessment (new topic) programs specifically to improve adherence with treatment: it is well recognized that failed compliance with medication is common in schizophrenia and related disorders, and some work has shown benefits in this regard by the introduction of specific targeted psychotherapeutic interventions the special needs of women with schizophrenia, with emphasis on clinical issues such as treatments during pregnancy and postpartum, and support for mothers with schizophrenia (new topic) the needs of families of people with schizophrenia, and therapeutic interventions for them first-episode psychosis: a treatment approach (new topic) treatment-resistant schizophrenia: a treatment approach (new topic) clinical rating scales in schizophrenia, covering psychotic symptoms, co-morbid symptoms, medication side-effects, and psychosocial outcomes: a brief overview of existing rating scales, instruments and interview schedules, with guidelines for use in the clinical setting (new topic) Each of these areas will be covered with a review of the relevant literature, a summary of the main findings, and some tips about how to meet these needs in clinical practice. Thus, the book will be both a review and a resource for clinicians and service-providers. Whilst the four principal authors will write most of the text, each chapter will have named authors, and there is an opportunity for leading international experts in the field to contribute, as chapter co-authors; this will also allow an international flavor to the text.Castle, David J. is the author of 'Pharmacological and Psychosocial Treatments in Schizophrenia' with ISBN 9781841842684 and ISBN 1841842680.
