Born in Seattle, Washington, in 1942, Dick was raised in Aspen, Colorado. After serving as an Army photographer in Vietnam, he joined the staff of National Geographic magazine. He won the National Press Photographers Association's Picture of the Year competition four times, was named Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers' Association in 1972, and voted Advertising Photographer of the Year by the American Society of Media Photographers in 1987. In 1988 Farrar, Straus, Giroux published a book based upon his Vietnam images entitled Where War Lives, and in 1991 he received Dartmouth College's Presidential Medal for Outstanding Leadership and Achievement. In 1993 he and his wife began photographing in the national parks with their panorama cameras and published the images as posters, note cards, and fine art prints that are still distributed around the world. In 1995 Dick began photographing golfers and golf courses, and in 2000 Andrews McMeel published his book Golfers, featuring photographs of and interviews with a wide assortment of individuals who share his passion for the game.
