Ed Offley has been a reporter and editorial writer since 1972, and has specialized in defense and military subjects for the past 20 years. He was a military reporter at The Seattle Post-Intelligencer from 1987 to 2000, where he covered military operations in the Pacific Northwest. He has since served as editor in chief of The Stars and Stripes, editor of DefenseWatch newsletter, and editor at STRATFOR.com, a strategic issues forecasting firm. Offley was a member of the media combat pool during the Gulf War, and has covered military operations and exercises in the former Soviet Union, Somalia, Panama, South Korea and 14 other foreign countries. He was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in beat reporting in 1996 for articles on a brain-injured former soldier who was released from a civilian jail. The soldier had his veterans benefits restored as a result of the coverage. Offley, who has appeared on CNN, C-SPAN, NPR and other television and radio networks to discuss military and defense issues, is co-author of two books, "Lifting the Fog of War" and "Digital War." Offley graduated from the University of Virginia in 1969, and served in the Naval Reserve from 1969 to 1971. He was an enlisted crewman on the USS Midway (CVA-41) during its deployment to Vietnam.
