In 1910 Otto Dix, a student at the Dresden School of Arts and Crafts, voluntarily enlisted in the German army. He was sent to the Western front in 1915. It wasn't until after the war, in 1920, that he created works associated with German Expressionism in which he praised anti-militarism and preached heartfelt hatred for war in a style that remains both moving and violent. The cycle of fifty etchings Dix created in 1924, Der Krieg (The War), sprang from his need to forget the horrors he had witnessed. In his etchings, published by Karl Nierendorf in Berlin, images of destruction, disfigurement, and maiming of the human body emerge from an environment of contrasting light and shade to form an apocalyptic vision.Becker, Annette is the author of 'Otto Dix Der Krieg/the War', published 2004 under ISBN 9788874390700 and ISBN 887439070X.
