The author, a native-speaker of English born into a monolingual family, began to study Japanese as an adult and published his first 7 books in that language while working as an acquisition editor and translation checker of fine non-fiction for Japanese publishers. One of his books, published by Chikuma Bunko challenged popular stereotypes of English and Japanese as antithetical languages (Eigo-wa Konna-ni Nippingo = English is That[italics] Japanese) and explored the relationship of this to the Japanese image of the Occidental. Another, published by Hakusuisha, pointed out that Japan was a "Mistranslation Paradise" (Goyaku Tengoku) while reading a horribly mistranslated book: Peter Farb's "Word Play." It further pointed out systematic problems in translation, where the Japanese image of the Occidental as hard-edged and pushy influenced the style and, in many cases, the content of the Japanese translation. This book, Orientalism & Occidentalism, puts some of his work in Japan into a form understandable to an English-language reader. More on his work in Japanese that is relevant to this title may be found at http://www.paraverse.org.Gill, Robin D. is the author of 'Orientalism And Occidentalism Is The Mistranslation Of Culture Inevitable?' with ISBN 9780974261829 and ISBN 0974261823.
