After the American Revolution several thousand families came to settle in Upper Canada, or Ontario. These settlers were former members of American Loyalist regiments, discharged British & German servicemen, & some civilians & refugees. They were offered grants of 200 acres of land on condition that they take an oath of allegiance & remain loyal to the British regime. In 1796 they were required to make a statement under oath respecting their right to hold title deeds, & the records resulting therefrom are known today as the District Loyalist Rolls of 1796. These rolls have now been transcribed by Dr. E. Keith Fitzgerald, who has supplemented the 4000 entries with data from his own research, creating in this new work a rich source of information on the early inhabitants of Ontario.Fitzgerald, E. Keith is the author of 'Ontario People, 1796-1803' with ISBN 9780806313665 and ISBN 0806313668.
