Miklos D. F. Udvardy is Professor of Biological Sciences at California State University, Sacramento. He taught at the University of British Columbia from 1952 to 1966, has been a visiting professor in the German Federal Republic, in Honduras, and at the University of Hawaii, and has lectured at other universities. He is a Research Associate of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History and has been an officer of several North American ornithological associations as well as a member of eight international ornithological congresses. His specialties include biogeography, ecology, and animal behavior, but he is primarily a research ornithologist. He has published more than 185 scientific papers and several books, including Dynamic Zoogeography (1969). The late John Farrand, Jr. authored several field guides, including the National Audubon Society Handbooks (McGraw-Hill, 1988) and several volumes in the National Audubon Society Pocket Guide series (Knopf). He was the general editor of the National Audubon Society Master Guide to Birding (Knopf, 1983). He was a past president of the Linnaean Society of New York, a Life Elective Member of the American Ornithologists' Union, and a Life Member of the Wilson Ornithological Society. Before becoming a free-lance nature writer, he served in the Division of Birds at the Smithsonian Institution and the Ornithology Department of the American Museum of Natural History.
