Kamien 4.0: The Multimedia Companion is designed to make the study of music easier, more rewarding, and more fun. It contains material that helps students to understand basic concepts, test their knowledge, and listen more effectively. The Multimedia Companion includes the following components: Frequently Asked Questions This is a light-hearted but informative series of answers to questions that, if they aren't asked frequently, probably should be. From the "Why do we need to study music to appreciate it?" to "What's wrong with the music I like now?" instructors and students alike will find many of these questions and answers to be helpful and thought provoking. Elements of Music This section provides enhanced explanations and examples of the concepts covered in Part I of the textbook. As the elements of music are explained, graphic and audio examples help to make each concept clear. Additional material helps students to understand the musical context of each element so that they hear the role that it plays when they listen to a piece of music. Finally, each section includes a self-test that will check their understanding of the element and their ability to hear it "in action." Listening Software This is another tool designed to enhance the listening experience in the course. Used in conjunction with a copy of the CD set that is available with the text, installing this software on a computer will turn it into an enhanced listening station. The software (called ChartPlayer) contains listening outlines for all the works on the CD set. Choose the selection, put the appropriate CD into the computer's CD-ROM drive, and a chart will guide the listener through the entire piece. It's easy to move from one section to another, and a narrative description runs as the music plays. Additional Recordings We've provided 52 additional recordings related to the works and composers discussed in the text. These files are in high-quality Windows Media format and can be heard on almost any Windows or Macintosh computer as well as many portable digital players. "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" From composer and humorist Peter Schickele, this selection provides a humorous solution to the challenge of long, complicated pieces of classical music. A tongue-in-cheek guide to the first movement of Beethoven's Fifth symphony. This track is included in both standard CD audio for use in any CD player and a digital version intended for use on a computer. Concertgoer's Guide Many newcomers to classical music are intimidated by the sometimes "serious" atmosphere of live performances. This guide will tell students all they need to know about attending classical concerts and recitals. An additional bonus is a section of tips for writing concert reports -- a frequent assignment in many music appreciation courses! Glossary This is the listing of musical terms and definitions that appears at the end of the textbook.
