Valerius Geist’s career as a zoologist has taken him to many wild places and to meet many of the world's greatest naturalists. He spent nearly two years in isolation in northern Canada studying mountain sheep and goats, living in a small cabin and not seeing another human being for months on end. His work has focused on how animals communicate, the nature of aggression, and on status displays, and his mountain sheep work has become well known. His interests extended to the evolution of Ice Age mammals, and later to humans, when he became the first Program Director of Environmental Science in a new Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Here he focused on generating environments that maximize human health and developed a biological theory of health. He continued to be interested in wild creatures, but turned from academic to applied science and to wildlife conservation policy. After twenty-seven years as a professor, Valerius retired to pursue his other interests and to enjoy family life. He and his wife, Renate, have three children and two grandchildren.Geist, Valerius is the author of 'Moose Behavior, Ecology, Conservation' with ISBN 9780896587441 and ISBN 0896587444.
