Haiku poetry is suffused with the spirit of Zen. The follower of Zen tries to meet every moment with a clear perception, and similarly, haiku attempts to isolate and reveal a single instant. As Zen cannot be pinned down with logic or reason, so its poetry illustrates a mood, an insight or an aspect of nature with delicacy and allusiveness. "Moon in the Pines" is a collection of these delicate poems from classical Japanese poets as well as from some modern-day writers. The poems are illustrated with Japanese paintings and woodcuts contemporary with the poetry, selected from the Art Institute of Chicago. These works of art often inspired the writing of haiku and sometimes served to complement the poetry. The poems are grouped around the themes of Dawn, Daylight, Dusk, and Moonlight, and are accompanied by end notes that expand on the meanings of the poems. An introduction provides background information on both Zen and haiku.Clements, Jonathan is the author of 'Moon in the Pines: Zen Haiku Poetry - Jonathan Clements' with ISBN 9780670892297 and ISBN 0670892297.
