Mike Sigalas's explorations of North Carolina began in boyhood, when he played in Smoky Mountain streams, reenacted Civil War battles with his siblings in nearby pastures, and visited the homes of his childhood heroes, Davy Crockett and Andrew Johnson. Later, as a college student visiting Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Spring Break, he awoke one morning in his freezing steel-walled utility van to find himself snowed in at the Smokemont Campground. On warmer days, Mike and his wife Kristin climbed mountain peaks, hiked to waterfalls, and rafted the Nantahala. Now a father, Mike achieves new feats, such as hiking to the top of Clingmans Dome while pushing a hefty two-year-old in a stroller. Mike's Professional writing career began Providentially in 1987, while he was working as a steamboat Pilot and Jungle Cruise guide at Disneyland. An off-duty Frontierland popcorn vendor slammed into Mike's 1970 Nova coupe in the employees' parking lot. Mike pounded out the dent himself and used the insurance money to buy his first word processor, a $350 Amstrad. On this, he tapped out his first published writing, supporting himself all the while in a variety of occupations, including blood bank distribution specialist, college-town rock singer, newspaper and magazine editor, and surf-band roadie. Moon Handbooks North Carolina was written to the rhythm of clinking cups in various Lowcountry coffeehouses, to the creaking of a ceiling fan in a sticky upstairs room, and to the steady drumbeat of a toddler's fists on an office door. A stickler for authenticity, Mike consumed only hickory-smoked barbecue, sweet tea, and New Bern-born Pepsi-Cola as he worked. He is also the author of Moon Handbooks Coastal Carolinas, Moon Handbooks South Carolina, Moon Handbooks Coastal, Moon Handbooks South Carlina, Moon Handbooks Charleston Savannah, and the co-author of Moon Handbooks Smoky Mountains.Sigalas, Mike is the author of 'Moon Handbooks North Carolina', published 2003 under ISBN 9781566913836 and ISBN 1566913837.
