Joe Cummings was born in New Orleans and raised in Texas, California, France, and Washington, D.C. A good portion of his childhood was spent in San Antonio, Texas, and a weekend family trip to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, brought him face to face with his first taco al carbon in the 1960s. Following the smell of fresh corn tortillas southward, he made his first solo trip to Mexico in 1973 and has been stuck on the Tortilla Trail ever since. Joe's affinity for Mexican border culture prompted him to take an epic road trip down Baja's Transpeninsular Highway in 1991 to research and write the first edition of Moon Handbooks Baja, followed a few years later by Moon Handbooks Cabo. Joe has traveled hundreds of thousands of miles in Mexico by burro, Volkswagen, and four-wheel-drive, and built a house near the beach in Baja's Cape Region. In addition to writing Moon Handbooks to Baja, Cabo, Mexico, Mexico City, and Northern Mexico, Joe has penned numerous other guidebooks, phrasebooks, and atlases for countries around the world. As a restless freelance journalist, Joe also finds himself contributing to the likes of Ambassador, Bangkok Post, BBC Holidays, Car and Travel, The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, Los Angeles Times, The Nation, Outside Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle, South China Morning Post, and the Wall Street Journal on occasion. He has twice received the Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Gold Award, and twice been a finalist in London's Thomas Cook Guidebook of the Year awards. In 2001 the government of Mexico awarded the Pluma de Plata (Silver Quill) to Joe for outstanding foreign journalism on Mexico.Cummings, Joe is the author of 'Moon Handbooks Cabo', published 2004 under ISBN 9781566916073 and ISBN 1566916070.
