Milestones in Neurotoxicity and Neuroprotection reviews recent advances in understanding the mechanism underlying the selective cell death of dopamine neurons in Parkinson's disease. MPTP, endogenous neurotoxins, L-DOPA, and metal were proved to induce apoptosis and necrosis in neurons. The relationship of these causal factors to the pathogenesis of Parkinson's is discussed to provide an overview on the role of neurotoxins in this degenerative disorder. Recent results on intracellular mechanism of neuroprotection are also summarized, and suggest that neuroprotection as a causal therapy of neurodegenerative disorders may become practical in the near future. This work is a tribute to Toshiharu Nagatsu as he pioneered the search for neurotoxins as a pathogenic factor in Parkinson's which in turn led to future important research in this subject area.Naoi, M. is the author of 'Milestones in Neurotoxicity and Neuroprotection A Lifelong Tribute to Toshiharu Nagatsu' with ISBN 9780444510365 and ISBN 0444510362.
