Tossing and Turning Turnovers Here's how to turn a lowly slice of soft sandwich bread into a lowly turnover. You'll be surprised at what a little brushing of butter can do. These quickly executed turnovers are ideal for overtired kids, as well as overworked parents. While we've offered up a range of fillings to tuck or spread inside, you should improvise to your heart's content. * Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. * Roll out the crust-free bread with a rolling pin. The bread should be flattened to the thickness of a saltine. * Brush the edges of the bread with the melted butter. In the center of each, spoon a generous tablespoon of filling, for spreadable items such as peanut butter or applesauce, cover all but the edges of the bread. *Fold the bread into a triangle and press the edges together. Crimp the seam with a fork if necessary. Set the turnovers on a baking sheet. * Brush the top of each turnover with additional butter and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes.
